Weekly WordPress #photography challenge from #Pittsburgh: abandoned

One of the most unique things about Pittsburgh are, of course, the rivers. We love exploring them both from the shore and from a kayak. Venture Outdoors’ Kayak Pittsburgh schedules group kayaking excursions along the rivers throughout the warmer months of the year – which are fast approaching. Jess and I have viewed one of the Pirates’ Skyblast fireworks shows from a kayak and it was AMAZING. In our opinion, it’s one of the most Pittsburgh things you can do!

If you attend of the group trips, you will also get a lot of local history including the origin of an abandoned boat that rests on the North Shore of the Allegheny across from the Cork Factory. For this challenge, I tried to get as close to it as I could:

I know you can’t tell that it’s a boat. The way it capsized, the best detailed pictures are from across the river on the other shore.

Living in downtown, there are many abandoned buildings just like there are in any city. Here are a few recent pictures:

Does anyone know what the above building was for?

Weekly WordPress #photography challenge from #Pittsburgh: selfie

Hello everyone…

How has your winter gone? It’s been crazy cold here. I’ve seen a few cool winter snowfall scenes but had to pass them up to get inside and get warm.

The theme of this post is not only winter but a contest the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership is running. They asked residents to print a sign that says “I love Downtown Pittsburgh Because…” and take a picture using it that shows a reason why. The winners of the contest get all kind of cultural prizes that focus on downtown culture and restaurants – including a gift certificate to nationally renowned Butcher and the Rye. Here is our entry. We took it at the Fairmont in downtown because that’s where I won her heart:

In order to win, we ask that you visit the Partnership on Twitter at @downtownpitt and retweet the photo or on Facebook and like it.

On a different note…

Earlier in the day, I was walking along one of the rivers and saw this scene during the snow flurries. I love how crisp the bridge’s reflection is in the river.

I also found this marker from one of the Pittsburgh floods. I tried to take a shot to give you an impression of how high it is off street level.

I’ve also been recently nominated for a Liebster Award. I can’t say how much I appreciate it! A huge thanks to Birgerbird for the nomination and the kind words! I’ll be spreading the blogging love this week.

Lastly, Jess and I haven’t gone out much since we moved downtown. We’re trying to save money for our wedding. Since she recently had her 30th birthday, we’ve been able to enjoy a few local hotspots that have impressed us a great deal:

Weekly #WordPress Photo Challenge from #Pittsburgh: object

This is one of my favorite objects in Pittsburgh. Does a professional sports stadium count for this week’s challenge?

On a more small scale, here is our cat Parker and his favorite object:

This lock is a sample of something pretty cool that is happening on Pittsburgh’s bridges. This article talks about an international movement called love locks. Couples buy locks, fasten them to bridges and throw the key in the river. Love the idea!  Here is an example:

Pittsburgh has always had a vibrant entrepreneurial culture. Stickers for old stores or bands are all over town.

And a final submission for the “object” photo challenge. I imagine a small child leaving this on the bridge after having a great time at a Pirates game.

On a side note, I have been slowly learning to code via Python thanks to a free class on Udemy. I have some pretty specific ideas on connecting that with API data mining from a consumer and civic data perspective. Wish me luck!

Weekly wordpress photo challenge from #Pittsburgh: juxtaposition

This is another shot with the intent of capturing Pittsburgh’s past with it’s present. This is an old school Pittsburgh house with evidence of urban decay. I love these views into Pittsburgh’s past. I don’t look at it as a sad thing but an example of the constant change that has to happen in a city for it to survive. A city has to be an organic being.

A cool view from the front of Fairmont Hotel in Pittsburgh. Oxford Center is, of course, in the background. One of my favorite things about this shot is the line of cardio equipment you can see at the Fairmont.

Jess and I love stopping at the jazz bar in the lobby every once in a while. It’s a great place to watch the city go by. If you can make it to the lobby during regular business hours they actually have a dog that greets you!

I recently walked by the Pennsylvanian – the old railroad station on Liberty Avenue – and saw this:

Few people know that our great city used to be spelled this way. It lost the “H” between 1891 and 1903.
